Creating Safer Schools for a Safer World
A CALL TO ACTION
The emerging language of school safety is drawn from Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), the Incident Command System (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS), National Response Framework (NRF), National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP), National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP), and Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS).
Learn by example how these new approaches impact school planning, design, construction, and renovation.
Take a new look at school design standards, best practices, lessons learned, latest technologies, funding, proposed legislation, school culture, and school climate.
Then, help shape the future of our learning environments by being part of our final report, 100 New Ideas for Creating Safer Schools for a Safer World.
DESIGNING THE SAFE SCHOOL
For the morning sessions, two of the most engaging speakers in the industry, Michael Dorn and Randy Atlas, will open your eyes to the realities of school crises everywhere, including school construction nightmares that have hurt owners and their communities. They will then lead you through a clear step-by-step process for avoiding these mistakes and thinking through solutions that promote safety, security, emergency management, and a nurturing school climate.
As an attendee, you may request a Certificate of Training for Safe School Design, issued by Johnson & Wales University, College of Business, and its research center, the Foundation for the Prevention of School Violence.

Michael Dorn is the Executive Director of Safe Havens International, the world's leading nonprofit campus safety organization. Safe Havens works with K-12 schools, institutions of higher learning, and faith-based organizations worldwide. Its analysts have published more than two dozen books on campus safety and have worked in more than 20 countries. Dorn is the lead author of Jane's Safe Schools Planning Guide for All Hazards, a standard reference for school systems around the world.

WE ARE THE PEOPLE WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR
Pre-Event Screening, Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Earth Day Screening, Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 6:30 pm
As part of the convention, we will have 2 sneak previews of We Are The People We've Been Waiting For, a new feature film from Academy Award winner David Puttnam (Chariots of Fire, The Killing Fields, The Mission). This documentary odyssey begins with a stark challenge about the future of education:
If we are going to survive, we desperately need the next generation to be smarter, more adaptable, and better prepared than any that have gone before. Our only chance is to improve the way we teach our young, to equip young people with the skills and attitudes that might steer this world of ours to a far safer place than at present looks likely.
The movie visits campuses around the world where educators are trying new ways to connect with all students. These visits are interwoven with interviews with students, parents, and provocative thought leaders. Surprise guests from the movie will lead the audience discussion following each screening.
