Advance Screening "April Showers"
Intense new film by former Columbine student Andrew Robinson shows how teens survived deadliest school shooting.
On Friday, writer-director Andrew Robinson, a 1999 Columbine graduate, will lead an audience discussion following an advance screening of "April Showers," an intense feature film that shows how several teens survive the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history.
The screening, which is open to the public, will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009, at 4:00 p.m., in Jared S. Polis Auditorium at Johnson & Wales University, 1900 Olive Street, Denver, CO 80220. The auditorium seats 500, and free tickets will be available at the door. Groups wishing to attend may also call event organizer John Simmons at 303-548-3816 to reserve tickets in advance.
"April Showers" is a dramatized retelling of Robinson's experiences during and after the Columbine High School tragedy. By releasing this film, he is hoping to promote deeper and more inclusive dialogue about school violence. Also participating in the forum will be producer Jenna Edwards and Columbine blogger Kristi Mohrbacher, who was in her junior year on the day of the shooting rampage that left 15 dead.
Based largely on actual events, "April Showers" follows the story of Sean Ryan (Kelly Blatz, "Prom Night") as he and fellow survivors attempt to make sense of the horrors they have just witnessed and, for Sean, cope with the loss of his friend April (Ellen Woglom, "Viva Laughlin").
"April Showers" features a budding cast led by Blatz, Daryl Sabara ("Spy Kids," "A Christmas Carol"), Janel Parrish ("Bratz"), and Ellen Woglom, with Illeana Douglas ("To Die For," "Stir of Echoes") and Tom Arnold ("Happy Endings," "Gardens of the Night") rounding out the ensemble.
The advance screening and discussion are part of a day-long event called, "Colorado Rising," during which members of the Columbine community, including parents, educators, first responders, and former students, will join stakeholders from across Colorado to discuss urgent radical change needed to protect schools. The event is co-sponsored by the Foundation for the Prevention of School Violence at Johnson & Wales University and by SchoolSAFE Communications.
