Washington, DC (dpa) May 31, 2010 -- President Barack Obama Monday expressed "deep regret" over the loss of life in Israel's attack on the Gaza aid ships.
But after speaking with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama also noted the importance of "learning all the facts and circumstances around this morning's tragic events" as soon as possible, according to a White House statement.
Netanyahu has cancelled his meeting with Obama on Tuesday to rush back home from Canada, where he was to meet Sunday with his counterpart Stephen Harper.
Israel has been condemned around the world for its attack on the aid flotilla that was trying to break Israel's blockade to Gaza Strip. At least ten activist civilians were killed in the attack.
Obama "expressed deep regret at the loss of life," the White House said.
Obama was in Chicago on Monday, where he was to speak at US Memorial Day ceremonies.
