Gaza City (dpa) May 25, 2010 -- Police operating in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip on Tuesday arrested a group of people suspected of burning down a summer camp for the children of Gazan refugees over the weekend, the region's Interior Ministry reported.
The ministry said in an emailed statement that security forces arrested the group for burning the beachside summer camp, which was still under construction, on Sunday. Those arrested are now being questioned.
The ministry did not say how many were arrested or to which organisation or armed group they might belong.
Early Sunday morning, around 40 masked militants stormed the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) summer camp, which was supposed to open July 22, on the beach of Gaza City, and set fire to it.
The attackers beat up guards and left a letter threatening UNWRA operations chief John Ging, which included the images of three gunshots.
Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad condemned the attack. At the time, Hamas' government vowed that those responsible would "soon be detained and taken to court."
